Détente [dey-tahnt] - an easing of tension. Some say in Paso Robles, the East does it better while others say the West is best. We say it’s time for a détente.

Growers

Colburn Vineyard

Colburn Vineyard

Détente mainly sources fruit from Colburn Vineyard, an immaculate family owned vineyard in the Adelaida District on the west-side of Paso Robles. Our Rhône varietals such as Syrah, Grenache, and Graciano are sourced from Colburn’s rolling terrain. An utterly perfect climate for Rhônes with slopes between 10-20%, an elevation of 940ft, and vineyard comprising Nacimento-Los Osos and Linne Colado complex soils. These moderately deep and well drained soils were weathered from calcareous sandstone and shale. Half of the vineyard has a north south orientation and the newer plantings of Syrah, Graciano, and Pedro Ximénez are east west facing. Tom Colburn, a UC Berkeley graduate, had a professional baseball career in Italy playing for La Fiorentina Baseball Club. While living near the Chianti region, Tom began to develop an appreciation for wine. Due to an unfortunate injury, Tom’s baseball career came to an end. Venturing back home to Calistoga Tom would later earn a degree in Viticulture Management under the supervision of famed Viticulturist Richard Thomas.

Still Waters Vineyard

Still Waters Vineyard

Our Bordeaux varieties are sourced from Still Waters Vineyard on Paso Robles' east-side in the El Pomar District. The vineyard established in 2003 by Paul Hoover is farmed California sustainable and SIP Certified, producing exquisite Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot grapes. The vineyard is situated on gentle sloping hillsides and enjoys the cool winds streaming in from the Pacific Ocean during the evenings. The diurnal temperature swings and north to south vine orientation lengthen ripening, developing flavor and maturity. The soils are rich in calcareous, developed loams with sandstone, that support drainage and provide proper nutrition for the vines. Paul a Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo graduate has a degree in Agricultural Business and Mechanized Agriculture and was named 2017 Wine Industry Person of the Year and 2019 Grower of the Year by the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance.
